Leefah and the others took their
seats in the stands. A large crowd had formed inside the tent worrying her with
the imminent danger.
Georgia sipped on her soda while
wiggling her legs excitedly, as though she were a child waiting for a gift
while sitting in a tall chair.
Mitzi brushed a strand of blond
hair out of her face and smiled, “You excited?”
Georgia nodded happily, “Oh
yeah! I’ve never been to the circus before…. My mom could never really afford
things like that….”
Mitzi pursed her lips, “Wow… I’m
sorry.”
Georgia shook her head, “It’s no
biggie, I’m an adult now…. Well… 18 but that’s close enough”
Mitzi stretched her arms and
relaxed on the wall of the tent, “Ya know, Granny is more of a kid than I am
sometimes. I’ll tell ya, she was super excited to come.”
Georgia looked past Mitzi and
saw how Maple, Leefah, and Chasity looked down at the stage with serious and
intense stares. “So were Chasity and Leefah…”
Chasity let out a long sigh,
“This is so boring! When is it going to start?”
Maple about smacked Chasity with
her cane, “Patience is key dear! I for one like our view without the show”
Maple replied as she drooled and stared at another fairly muscular and tan man.
Leefah looked at her phone for
any missed calls from Kyoko, but instead was blessed with the fact that there
was no signal. She looked around worriedly and saw everyone waiting innocently.
Suddenly, the lights shut off!
Sending the entire tent into complete darkness.
Leefah’s nearly stood up but
stopped when she was a spotlight shine down in the center of the stage.
In the middle of the light, a
man in a tuxedo and purple top hat stood. He shot his face up and flashed a
smile to everyone in the audience. “Welcome everyone!” he shouted, his calm
cool and collected voice slithering its way into everyone’s ear drums like a
snake. “I would like to welcome you all to the Blood Moon Circus!”
The audience became a roaring
wave of cheers and happiness.
The man tipped his hat at them,
“I’m your host and fabulous ring master, Joker Cardasius! Pleasure to make your
acquaintance!”
Leefah nearly stood up once
again but was pulled back in her seat by Maple. Leefah looked at her worriedly,
a strand of sweaty hair sticking to her forehead. Her eyes the ones of a
panicking victim in a horror movie.
Maple shook her head,
“Patience…”
Joker twirled as though he were
a professional dancer, flapping his coat in the air with every twirl. He
stopped and then posed, “And boy, don’t we have a show for you all today! I’m
sure it’ll be a blast!”
The spotlight turned to stare at
a group of people.
Joker waved to them, “I present
to you, The Circus Freaks!”
A large man rolled out and posed
his muscles.
Joker pointed, “That man there
is Braun! He’s our strong man able to lift the heaviest of objects with ease!”
A skinnier darker skinned woman
twirled out and looked at everyone annoyed.
Joker nodded, “The woman in the
green clothes is Bella! She’s our belly dancer and snake charmer. Some say
she’s even able to control people but we won’t be testing that out today!”
Two children ran out and stood
beside Bella.
Joker pointed to them both, “The
children are our assistants! The girl, Prim, and the boy, Rue, are great for
attracting the audiences. After all, they are adorable!”
The crowded let out a big
“Awwwwww!”
The spotlight then turned to a
woman standing on a ledge at the top of the tent. She stood on the thinnest of
pipes to hold her up. She grasped her red and black umbrella and blew a kiss to
the crowd. She jumped up and made two flips, then gently glided down to the
ground, landing next to Joker. She winked and kissed him on the cheek.
Joker blushed, “And this here is
my wife. Tophet Tightrope, our Acrobat capable of the most amazing things
you’ve ever seen.”
Tophet bowed at everyone and
walked next to the other Circus Freaks.
The crowd roared with excitement
and cheers!
Leefah looked around surprised
at the excitement. “Why are they so in awe? Have all of them heard of this
Circus?”
Chasity popped a piece of
popcorn into her mouth, “Oh Leelee, It’s an event that happens every few
years.”
Leefah looked at her confused.
Chasity pointed up to a hole in
the tent, “Up there. See the moon?”
Leefah squinted and saw the
brief outline of the Space rock who lit up the world’s nights.
Chasity popped another piece in
her mouth, “Every few years, the moon turns blood red and it’s super cool! All
of sunset valley is bathed in the red light and it’s super cool! I’ve never
seen it but Desirae and Morgana have, they’ve been here the longest.”
Leefah looked around again,
“That’s strange…. Where’s Morgana?”
Chasity’s head nearly exploded
with anger and she glared at Leefah, “LEELEE!!!
I’M YOUR LOVE, WHY DO YOU CARE ABOUT HER?!?!”
Leefah sighed, “Well I would
have assumed she’d come considering she loves crowds…”
Georgia peeked down at them,
“Have any of you seen Desirae too? I know she said she didn’t want to come but
I would have thought she’d at least call or talk to you guys…”
Leefah and Chasity shook their
heads and looked at each other curiously.
Georgia shrugged her shoulders
and went back to watching the Circus Freaks make poses for the cameras.
Leefah looked back around at the
crowd again and managed to make outlines of everyone. She peered closer and
realized everyone in the crowd was dressed in tourist attire!
She sat back and whispered in
Maple’s ear, “After you moved here from Maeander, Had you witnessed this circus
and the blood moon?”
Maple shook her head, “No… It
was a year after that. This is my first time witnessing it.”
Leefah looked back down at her
phone and saw she still had no service, then she shut it worriedly.
Back at the civilian services
office, Kyoko franticly ran around with his phone to his ear! He tapped on his
computer every so often to bring back an image of five wanted posters. “C’mon
Leefah? Pick up?!” The phone stopped ringing once again and he slumped in his
chair worriedly.
Bellow the tent, Morgana and
Desirae looked up through the cracks of wooden floorboards and saw the crowd of
people and the Circus Freaks. Desirae motioned to Morgana to continue
following.
In the center of the stage,
Joker tipped his hat once more.
Leefah rubbed her index finger
along the outline of her wand clinging to her pants leg.
Joker flashed one last smile,
“We sincerely hope you enjoy the show!” he shouted, flicking his wand into the
air and sending up a large firework, popping after exiting the hole and filling
the tent with a rainbow of colors and sparkles.
